MESSAGE FROM NURSULTAN NAZARBAYEV, PRESIDENT OF KAZAKHSTAN

Dear Friends,

The idea of creating a new capital for Kazakhstan dates back to the first days of our independence. I remember His Majesty, Juan Carlos, King of Spain, telling me how King Philip II moved Spain's capital from Toledo to Madrid, and how that was a controversial move. A benchmark for 'new' capitals is Washington - which was created in a deserted district following the instructions of George Washington, the first US president. Back then the decision had huge political value as a symbol of independence from the British crown. In Russia, the change of capital, on two separate occasions, has had undisputed historical significance. I remember heated discussions in our parliament over the relocation issue with many deputies declaring that the move would incur inappropriate expense.

Today, however, we have a new capital which is the property and pride of the entire country. The population of Astana has increased three-fold since 1998, and by 2010 the population should reach one million. Such forecasts underline the idea of Astana being the youngest, most vibrant and dynamic Capital City in the world. I am convinced, that Astana will soon be included in the select list of the most attractive and competitive world capitals. Independence gave birth to Astana, and Astana, in turn, confirms and develops our independence. Astana is a bright, strong, prosperous city going forward and uniting the people of Kazakhstan. Astana is now the heart of our nation, an idea which has united people.

Today representatives of over a hundred nationalities live in Astana. The friendship of peoples, mutual understanding and solidarity is the basis on which we continue to build Astana - and the new Kazakhstan!

Nursultan Nazarbayev
The President of the Republic of Kazakhstan
